  Once she had finished chanting, she waved her wand over the beaker and the golden solution began to bubble to a boil. Smoke clouded the inside of the beaker and spilled over the rim, but Jasynta just held onto the glass securely. Blake jerked forward, ready to wrench the scalding beaker out of her dainty little hand at the first sign of pain or distress on her face. But instead of grimacing, Jasynta beamed at him over the top of the smoking beaker.

  She poured a small amount of the boiling potion into a small glass and handed it to him. He took the smoking glass from her and read the anticipation and pride in her eyes. She wanted it so much to be a success.

  Blake took a deep breath and knocked back the potion in one gulp. This had to work. For all their sakes.

  Immediately, he coughed and sputtered as the liquid made its way down his throat.

  He would have to talk to Jasynta about putting in some flavor enhancers. This stuff not only had to be good, it should taste good as well.

  Junk food was so popular because people liked the taste, even if it was bad for them. So even if 'The Right Stuff' had the right stuff, people weren't going to go for it unless it tasted right.

  His eyes widened, and his senses sizzled as his whole body seemed to explode with heat and want. His blood boiled and gushed through his veins, awakening every nerve and setting every cell and neuron alight in his body. The room whirled around him, trapping him in a cyclone of jarring sounds, smells and sights. He could see everything starkly before him—the night cityscape through the window, the hairline crack on the far wall of the room, the dust motes on the meeting room table, the tiny bubbles in the beaker, everything was magnified and amplified. Every detail shot through his mind with dizzying, agonizing clarity. Blake blinked hard, and shook his head, trying to regain his balance and his orientation.

  Slamming his hands down on the table to right himself, Blake roared out her name, “Jasynta!”

  He took a step and stumbled, and he immediately put a hand to his spinning head. Hearing a voice, his gaze snapped up.

  The spinning stopped abruptly as he became aware of only one thing in the room. A single point of heat attracted him, lured him, seduced him.

  His hot, scorching gaze zeroed in on Jasynta.

  CHAPTER TWO

  An animal growl erupted from his throat, and he stalked forward slowly, drawn by that inviting, irresistible point of heat.

  The spinning around him stopped as his buzzing, burning senses snapped together and homed in on the female who had backed away from him and was presently a blur of movement at the long table, pouring liquids and muttering incoherent words in a panic. His eyes sought her out like heat missiles through the jumble of colors and images all around him. The room receded from him, the sounds, lights and smells of the city and the entire meeting room faded from him. His vision seemed to narrow until he had only one thing in his sights. His senses burned and became sharply aware of only one thing.

  He could see her every movement as if in slow motion. He saw her hands trembling as she sloshed some cold water in a glass from a pitcher. He saw her blink repeatedly and caught the small quaver of her lips. He could feel and hear her lush, fleshy legs moving under her dress as she rushed about.   Her eyes widened and she swallowed hard, but she didn't push him away. “Blake...” She was breathing heavily, her cheeks flushed. Shakily, she put a hand on his arm. “I think...”

  The bear in him growled, but the man muscled in to wag a warning finger in front of the beast: Take her, yes. But if she says no, then no.

  The bear glowered but chuffed in acquiescence. He would not take his mate against her will.

  Both man and bear were in agreement as Blake moved towards the sexy, curvy brunette before him. She was standing just inches from him, her brown eyes registering confusion and concern.

  Jasynta froze when the door of the meeting room was thrown wide open and Lucas Rieve, the PAC Alpha strolled in, his deep, resonant voice booming through the meeting room. “And let me introduce Mr Dax Ferro, the PAC's newly appointed legal counsel...”

  Lucas jerked violently to a halt at the door, almost knocking into the tall, smartly suited lawyer beside him.

  In a heartbeat, Blake had shifted to his bear form. The bear emerged fully, bursting to the fore to protect its mate. Instead of a man, a big, angry bear with golden fur and blazing blue eyes was now crouched over the long table.

  Both men at the door kept their eyes on Blake, not even attempting to shift their gazes to the squirming witch beneath him. Not that they could see anything even if they tried. Blake had made sure that she was completely and fully covered by his body, his golden fur bristling and rising to make sure that she was totally shielded from the sharp, intense gazes of the two tall men.

  Jasynta was still lying on her back on the table, and she tried to breathe through the heavy mass of fur that was pressing down protectively and possessively over her.

  Blake growled, moving his massive body forward to obscure a half-naked, panting and fully panicking witch from the surprised gazes of the two men at the door. Blake lowered his body further, intent on shielding her from the eyes of the PAC Alpha and the newly appointed PAC lawyer.

  The bear growled threateningly. Blake would not allow the two men to see his mate in such a state, with her dress hiked up to her waist, sprawled on her back over the table, writhing and panting. No one would see her like this. His show of aggression and possession made it clear that that erotic sight was meant for his eyes only.

  Jasynta held her breath and twisted her face to peek through the dense golden fur enveloping her. She saw Lucas standing by the door, his lips about to twitch into a grin.

  Dax Ferro, on the other hand, was the consummate lawyer. She knew that he was a very tough, resourceful and successful lawyer, and kept a very busy schedule—in the boardroom, the courtroom and the bedroom. Dax kept his gray eyes steadily on Blake, showing no fear or challenge. If he was at all surprised or amused at the hairy, furry situation he had just walked in on, he didn't show it.

  Jasynta wasn't surprised at the lawyer's quiet confidence and collected poise in the face of a hulking, maddened bear. Dax was an alpha wolf, like Lucas. But from what she'd heard from her sister Melynda, Dax was more of a lone wolf. Dark, brooding and unpredictable.

  Blake was leaning forward, warning the two men at the door from coming any nearer.

  “Dax, this is Council member Blake Madden. You're seeing him now in his bear form. Hopefully at our next meeting, you'll get to meet his human half, which is by far his better half,” Lucas said with a smirk. “Come, Dax, I'll show you the indoor obstacle course that our trainers use to train the new recruits to our Enforcement Unit.”

  As Lucas pulled the door shut after Dax, Jasynta heard the Alpha give a low chuckle.

  Lucas was a good Alpha who took the welfare of his PAC members and the paranormal and human community of New Moon City seriously. He was also an astute judge of character. If Lucas trusted Dax Ferro, then the PAC members shouldn't have any difficulty working with Dax even though she had often heard Melynda complaining and griping about Dax. But Melynda complained and griped a lot, about her boss Dax Ferro in particular. From the little she saw, Jasynta thought that Dax was a pretty decent, discreet chap, even if he had a slightly dark and dangerous streak about him. Well, that dangerous steak would serve him well. As the appointed PAC lawyer, he would have to watch the backs and cover the asses of all the PAC members.

  A pretty dangerous and frankly, impossible job that was.

  She had to pity the guy.

  But she knew that Blake would show him no pity and no mercy whatsoever if he had caught even the slightest glimpse of her bare legs and body. Blake would likely rip out the guy's eyes and feed them to him.

  Once the door closed completely behind Lucas and Dax, Jasynta began to wiggle and squirm and tried to get her voice out. Her fist shot out a

  “Are you okay?” Blake asked, putting out a hand to steady her.

  “You...almost suffocated me,” she wheezed, swallowing huge, uneven breaths.

  “I...I'm sorry.” But he didn't sound too sorry. “I will not let any male see...” My mate naked!

  Blake sucked in a shuddering breath, his fists and jaw so tightly clenched she could hear the sound of knuckles popping and teeth grinding.

  Jasynta looked down and ran a hand through her disheveled curls. She must look a right mess. And, she was missing a few garments, wasn't she? When she turned in a circle, her eyes scanning the floor, Blake rushed to pick up her white coat and dusted it off before handing it to her. She shrugged into it and straightened the collars smartly.

  She was in her stiff white coat and her dress had been carefully straightened, but under her dress, she was missing something. Something he had ripped away.

  Out of the corner of her eye she saw Blake swoop down swiftly and surreptitiously snare her ripped panties in his fist.
